My backyard is part of the Great Norwood Squirrelway. Let me explain. With the houses as close as they are and the yards as small as they are, the squirrels are able to run from yard to yard without ever touching the ground. They use the fences, trees, sheds, you get the idea. This is pretty great for the squirrels, especially with all the dogs and cats in the neighborhood.
In my yard, the squirrels come down my neighbor’s roof, hop onto the fence, run down the fence to the tree at the back of their yard, up that tree to the big maple in the middle of my yard, through that to jump to the maple in the yard next door. It sets my dogs off like crazy. I think the squirrels know.
The squirrelway does not support the transport of goods and contraband. By goods, I mean trash that the squirrels think might be edible and by contraband, I mean tomatoes. I’m not sure if my dogs race out the back door so they can catch a squirrel or so they can grab something that’s been dropped by them.
In any case, if it’s summer, and you’re missing tomatoes, they might be in my backyard, thanks to the squirrelway.
